Colombo, Sigiriya and Kandy Tour Itinerary

Day 1
Welcome to Sri Lanka
Colombo City Tour: The tour will start from the Colombo Fort area, which was called a fortress because it was a fortress during the time of the Portuguese and Dutch. Afterwards we will take you to the Colombo National Museum to see some of the great displays of Colombo's artistic crafts and archaeology. You will drive through the commercial areas and pass by Pettah, a colorful oriental bazaar with a mix of people, vintage vehicles, businesses, mosques and temples. You will see a Hindu temple, a Buddhist temple and the Jami Ul Alfar Jumma Mosque in Colombo. Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage: An orphanage, nursery and captive breeding site for wild Asian elephants, located in Pinnawala village, 13 km northeast of Kegalle town in Sabaragamuwa Province of Sri Lanka. Pinnawala is home to the largest herd of captive elephants in the world. The orphanage was established to care for and protect the many orphaned wild elephants that are found wandering in the forests of Sri Lanka. It was established in 1975 by the Sri Lanka Department of Wildlife Conservation. Dambulla: The Golden Cave Temple of Dambulla has been a place of pilgrimage for the last 22 centuries. It is also the largest and best preserved cave temple on the island (there are others). Dambulla Cave Temple was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991 to preserve the magnificent mural paintings and over 150 statues in and around the temple. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

Sigiriya (UNESCO World Heritage Site): The rocky outcrop of Sigiriya is home to the ancient remains of King Kassapa’s 5th century AD palace. The summit can be reached via stairs built into the mountainside and features the Lion Rock and the remains of the palace and fort. Visitors will be treated to the grandeur of the site when they reach the top, with 360-degree views of the jungle below. The rainwater tanks are still present and in good condition. Sigiriya was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

Anuradhapura (UNESCO World Heritage Site): The city of Anuradhapura was the first ancient capital of Sri Lanka and remains a sacred Buddhist religious center. It is located about 200 kilometers (124 mi) north of Colombo, the current capital. Buddhist devotees and pilgrims visit the well-preserved ruins of temples and religious centers along the banks of the Malwathu Oya River throughout the year. The city is also home to one of the largest and most sacred Bodhi trees in Sri Lanka, believed to be a descendant of the Bodhi tree on which Buddha became enlightened. Anuradhapura became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

Polonnaruwa (UNESCO World Heritage Site): After the destruction of Anuradhapura in the 1st century, Polonnaruwa became the second capital of Sri Lanka. The remains include Brahmanical buildings of the Chola civilization and the garden city that was built on the site in the 12th century. Polonnaruwa is part of the Cultural Triangle, along with Anuradhapura and Sigiriya. This site was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

Kandy: Kandy, a mountain city in Sri Lanka, was the home of the Sinhalese kings from 1592 to 1815. It is also the site of Sri Dalada Maligawa, also called the Temple of the Tooth, as it is a special container. it contains a tooth of Buddha. Over the years the relic acquired great political importance; it was believed that the possessor of the sacred tooth was the one who would have power over the Buddhist population. The holy city of Kandy was named a World Heritage Site in 1988. Dinner at the hotel.

Nuwara Eliya: The “Little England” of Sri Lanka is set amidst beautiful landscapes of mountains, valleys, waterfalls and tea plantations. Samuel Baker, the discoverer of Lake Albert and explorer of the Nile in 1846, founded the city. It is supposedly one of the coldest places on the island, but it is like a spring day in England, although the temperature drops at night. Many of the buildings retain colonial-era features, such as Queen’s Cottage, the Grand Hotel, the Hill Club, the Post Office, etc. The city’s attractions include the golf course, trout streams, Victoria Park and boating on the lake. Bentota: Bentota is located 64 km south of Colombo on the southwestern coastal strip of Sri Lanka. Bentota is famous as the main beach resort in the southwestern and southern coastal areas of Sri Lanka. South of Colombo city, the town of Kalutara with its beautiful beach is the gateway to the southwestern and southern beaches of the bay. Kalutara is the most popular beach after Bentota. Beruwala Bay Beach, located just before reaching Aluthgama at the Bentota bridge, and Bentota Bay Beach, just across the bridge, are the most popular twin beaches along the coast. The southernmost coast is also full of beautiful tropical beaches making it ideal for a perfect beach holiday with sun and sand.
